Job Description:

Apprentice I: This is a training position, designed to prepare future Generation Specialists for work in a team-based environment. These individuals will learn how to maintain a hydro plant and associated equipment. Under direct supervision, Apprentice I will perform the necessary maintenance functions essential for the safe and efficient operation of the area plants and facilities.

Apprentice II: Under limited supervision: Performs the necessary maintenance functions essential for the safe and efficient operation of the area plants and facilities.

Journeyman: Performs the necessary maintenance functions essential for the safe and efficient operation of the area plants and facilities. Completes assigned tasks and assumes a lead role when required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

Knowledge of:

  • Basic electricity and the function, operation, troubleshooting and repair of complex equipment through use of drawings and instructional manuals.

Skills in:

  • Skills in maintenance of power plants

  • Inspection and maintenance of heavy equipment

  • Basic welding and fabrication

  • Basic computing

  • Personal communication

  • Interactive teamwork

  • Conflict resolution.

Ability to:

  • Ability to maintain high productivity with minimal supervision

  • Perform heavy manual labor in adverse conditions

  • Communicate effectively

  • Establish positive working relationships in a team-based environment

  • Respond to emergencies in excess of normal working hours

  • Perform other duties/tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (Apprentice I)

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED.

AND

  • Appropriate education and/or work experience in electrical, generation, or power plants that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position, and the ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months and Medical Card prior to hire.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (Apprentice II)

Minimum qualifications to enter the Generation Specialist Apprentice Training Program as an Apprentice II in Operations are as follows:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED

AND

  • Appropriate education and/or work experience in electrical, generation, or power plants that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities

AND

  • Enrollment in a Generation Apprenticeship Training Program, or a combination of education and work experience that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities

AND

  • Six months of power plant experience.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position, and the ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months and Medical Card prior to hire.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (Journeyman Level)

Education: High school diploma or GED and appropriate education and/or work experience in electrical, generation, or power plants that provides the desired knowledge, skills, and abilities

Experience: Certificate of completion of a Generation Specialist training program that is recognized by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training (BAT)

  • At least three years of relevant work experience in power plant operations and maintenance.

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position, and the ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) within six months and Medical Card prior to hire.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This job will require occasional, physically strenuous work for long periods of time and in adverse conditions. Job requires the ability to bend, stoop, squat, crouch, crawl, climb into and out of vehicles, twist, kneel, balance and reach, and climb multiple flights of stairs. Occasionally lifting items weighing 75 lbs. shoulder height and above; occasionally lifting items weighing up to 100 lbs. waist high and knee high. Occasionally using exertional force up to 50 lbs. to push/pull cable, etc.; Occasionally carrying items weighing up to 100 lbs. with two hands and occasionally carrying items weighing up to 75 lbs. with one hand. Requires the ability to operate a vehicle. Must be able to grasp and hold simple hand tools and testing equipment and use fine motor skills to use a computer keyboard, test equipment, and replace parts. Applicant must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment, post-offer Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Physically able to perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation and without posing a direct threat of harm to self, others, or property. May have occasional overnight stays to various areas. May also have to work, per managers request, as needed.
